How many audiobooks are AI-narrated? About 1.2% of the ones we cataloged
AI-narrated audiobooks are a real and growing category, and also, for now, a small one. Across 3,237 product pages where the narration is credited, 1.2% use a synthetic voice; the rest are human-read.
A synthetic-voice audiobook is narrated by a text-to-speech system rather than a person. The retailer labels these on the product page, so we can count them: of 3,237 audiobooks where the narration is credited, 40 (1.2%) are synthetic. Human narration is still overwhelmingly the norm.
Where AI narration shows up
The synthetic titles we found skew toward public-domain classics and short non-fiction, where a low-cost recording makes commercial sense. Named examples in our catalog include The Time Machine and Genji monogatari.
Our policy on synthetic narration
We keep synthetic-voice titles out of our curated rankings and best-of lists. The reasoning is simple: those lists exist to point you to a great listening performance, and a performance is a human thing. We flag synthetic narration where we detect it and leave it out of the recommendations rather than pretend the distinction does not matter. The same policy runs across every catalog we build.
