Across the 8,560 audiobooks in our dataset, genre is the single clearest length signal. Thriller tops the table at an average of 12.3 hours per book; self-help sits at the bottom with 7.9, a 56% gap between the two.
The gap, genre by genre
In finish-time terms, that gap is the difference between a two-week commitment and a three-week one: at 45 minutes of listening a day, the average self-help audiobook takes 11 days to finish and the average thriller takes 17.
Averages vs medians
Averages hide shape. Romance shows the widest gap between its average (8.4 hrs) and its median (6.6 hrs): 27% apart. In plain terms: the typical romance audiobook is shorter than the average suggests, and a long tail of very long titles pulls the average up.
