Quartiles put numbers on the shape: a quarter of the dataset finishes inside 5.7 hours, half inside 8.9, and three quarters inside 11.8. So if your book runs past 11.8 hours, it's genuinely in the long quarter of everything we measured.

The extremes

The extremes: The Rook is the shortest at 0.5 hours, and The Complete Harry Potter Collection (Books 1-7) the longest at 101.8. Only 284 books (3%) cross the 20-hour line.

Checked against the real durations

Our lengths are estimates (pages × 275 words ÷ 9,300 words/hour), so we pressure-tested them: 1,784 of these audiobooks are author-verified editions whose retailer product page lists the REAL narration time. In aggregate the estimate holds up: the average estimated length across those 1,784 books is 10.6 hours versus 10.6 measured, a 1% gap; at the median it is 10.4 vs 9.7 (8%). Book by book the estimate is looser: 56% land within 20% of the store's real time, which is why every estimate on this site is labeled as one.
