How fast do audiobook narrators read? The median is 155 words a minute

Pairing our page counts with the retailer's REAL narration times on 1,522 audiobooks lets us measure how fast narrators actually read: a median of 155 words a minute, and it varies more by genre than you would guess.

155 wpmmedian narration pace
137 wpmscience fiction, the slowest genre
189 wpmyoung adult, the fastest genre

The typical audiobook narrator reads at about 155 words a minute. We can put a number on it because for 1,522 audiobooks we hold both the page count and the retailer's real listed narration time, so pace is just words (pages × 275) divided by minutes. For comparison, that is well below a silent reader's pace, which is the whole reason a fast playback speed feels natural.

Pace by genre

Median narration pace by genre (words per minute)
  1. Young Adult53 books189 wpm
  2. Horror33 books170 wpm
  3. Mystery134 books164 wpm
  4. Historical Fiction56 books159 wpm
  5. Thriller190 books158 wpm
  6. Romance447 books157 wpm
  7. Fantasy363 books145 wpm
  8. Science Fiction203 books137 wpm

Science Fiction is read slowest (137 wpm) and young adult fastest (189 wpm), a spread of 38%. Denser, more deliberate prose gets a slower read; lighter, faster-moving genres get a quicker one. In practice a naturally fast narration is a free speed bump before you touch the playback dial.

The assumption-free version

Words-per-minute leans on a 275-words-a-page assumption, so here is the pure measurement that needs no assumption: minutes of narration per 100 pages, genre by genre. It tells the same story from the other direction.

Methodology.Pace = pages × 275 words ÷ the store's real narration minutes; genre medians use primary-genre pools with at least 30 store-verified books; paces outside 90 to 250 wpm are dropped as edition mismatches. Narration pace in words per minute derives from Open Library page counts × 275 words/page ÷ the store's real duration, so the 275-words assumption carries into every absolute wpm figure; cross-book and cross-genre comparisons are robust because the assumption cancels. The assumption-free absolute is minutes of narration per 100 pages, a pure measurement. Real narration durations are the store-listed running times of 1,784 author-verified audiobook editions (we read each retailer product page's own schema.org record; author identity confirmed per book).
