Pairing our page counts with the retailer's REAL narration times on 1,585 audiobooks lets us measure how fast narrators actually read: a median of 154 words a minute, and it varies more by genre than you would guess.
The typical audiobook narrator reads at about 154 words a minute. We can put a number on it because for 1,585 audiobooks we hold both the page count and the retailer's real listed narration time, so pace is just words (pages × 275) divided by minutes. For comparison, that is well below a silent reader's pace, which is the whole reason a fast playback speed feels natural.
Pace by genre
Science Fiction is read slowest (137 wpm) and young adult fastest (189 wpm), a spread of 37%. Denser, more deliberate prose gets a slower read; lighter, faster-moving genres get a quicker one. In practice a naturally fast narration is a free speed bump before you touch the playback dial.

Words-per-minute leans on a 275-words-a-page assumption, so here is the pure measurement that needs no assumption: minutes of narration per 100 pages, genre by genre. It tells the same story from the other direction.
