Data story · narrator league table
The most-recorded audiobook narrators, measured: Hugh Fraser leads with 28 titles
Using the retailer's own narrator credits on 1,771 audiobooks, we built a league table: who records the most, whose catalogs listeners rate highest (weighted, never subjective), and how fast each one reads. 188 narrators have three or more books in our catalog.
For 1,771 of the audiobooks in our catalog we hold the narrator credit straight from the retailer's product page (schema.org read-by data on author-verified editions, no guessing). That is enough to rank narrators three ways: by how many titles they have recorded, by how highly listeners rate their catalog, and by how fast they read. 188 narrators clear three books; Hugh Fraser leads the count with 28.

The highest-rated narrators
Ranked instead by a Bayesian-weighted listener rating of their whole catalog (the same formula our best-of pages use, so a high average on a handful of ratings cannot leapfrog a strong average on thousands), Stephen Briggs comes out on top at 4.25★ across 4 titles.
The Hugh Fraser shelf
Hugh Fraser's 28 credited titles include And Then There Were None, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, The Mystery of the Blue Train and Murder on the Links, 177.6 hours of narration in our catalog alone.

Start listening freeMethodology.A narrator is counted only when the retailer's product page credits them on an author-verified edition (schema.org read-by); synthetic-voice narration is excluded. Weighted rating = (v·R + 50·C) ÷ (v + 50), R the catalog's rating-count-weighted mean listener rating, v its total ratings, C the 3.98★ mean across all credited books. Narration pace in words per minute derives from Open Library page counts × 275 words/page ÷ the store's real duration, so the 275-words assumption carries into every absolute wpm figure; cross-book and cross-genre comparisons are robust because the assumption cancels. The assumption-free absolute is minutes of narration per 100 pages, a pure measurement. Real narration durations are the store-listed running times of 1,784 author-verified audiobook editions (we read each retailer product page's own schema.org record; author identity confirmed per book). Dataset: 8,557 audiobooks measured by The Books Insider as of 2026-07-26. Listening hours are estimated from page counts (pages × 275 words ÷ 9,300 words/hour, ±10%); full method on the About page.
